Postmodernism is a way of approaching traditional ideas and practices in non-traditional ways. This idea gained momentum through to the 1950`s before dominating literature, art and the intellectual scene of the 1960`s. In 1949 the term `Postmodernism` was used to describe dissatisfaction with the severe & austere modern architecture which in turn led to the postmodern architecture movement. Postmodernism in architecture and design is marked by the re-emergence of surface ornament, historical references and reference to surrounding buildings and their detail.
